Our Favorite Cooling Aveda Ingredients

A no-fuss topknot. Breezy cotton sundresses. An inflatable backyard pool and a margarita. When it comes to beating the heat, everyone has a tactic of choice—and we here at Salon Soca are no exception. Having endured many scorching Chicago summers, we like to think we’ve elevated staying cool to an art form. We’ve also developed a major fixation on Aveda products that feature cooling herbs and ingredients. Think of them as your own personal, purse-sized AC units.

Salon Soca and Aveda Celebrate Earth Month!

Did you know the first Earth Day was in 1970? It was started to bring attention to environmental reform and to help foster peace and being kind to the earth. April 22nd was chosen because it’s in between college spring break/exams and the holidays Easter and Passover. It’s also late enough in the Spring that demonstrations and education can take place outdoors.

Originally, Earth Day was only focused on in the U.S. until 1990 when Denis Hayes, who was the coordinator of the event in 1970, organized events in 141 nations around the world thereby making Earth Day an international event. Earthday.org  is a great place to learn about environmental projects and educational resources.

Aveda honors Earth Day by setting aside a whole month to raise awareness and funding for both local and international environmental concerns. Since 1999 Aveda and it’s network of supporters have raised $38 million to support organizations that directly impact environmental concerns.

This year the Light the Way candles are helping bring clean water to Madagascar. Having access to clean water means mothers don’t have to walk for hours and lug not so clean water back from a river!

Learn more about Aveda’s Earth Month involvement here!

We here at Salon Soca raise money in a few ways:

Have you tried Aveda's Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight?

It's July in Chicago. We all know that means getting smooth hair is a hassle. Well Naturally Straight is here to help!

undefined

Here are some of the benefits of this new product:

Progressively straightens curls with every use

  • As you blow-dry your hair, plant-derived fibers help create a locking layer to help hold your hair straight, day after day*
  • Organic cassava root helps form a barrier against intense humidity to help you forget about frizz
  • Straight styling becomes faster and easier

  • *After 5 consecutive applications of naturally straight, hair will stay straight for up to 3 washes.

We love it! Without a blow dry the product helps calm the curl and smooth frizz. With a blow dry you'll see much straighter and smoother results using Naturally Straight. Read some of these reviews from aveda.com

    Water Saving with Salon Soca

    download.jpg

We love Earth Month here at Salon Soca so we’d like to share a few ways we like to conserve water!

    1. Make a short (2 song playlist) to listen to while you shower to keep your shower short.

    2. Turn the water off while brushing your teeth.

    3. Only run the dishwasher when it is full.

    -Weronika

    1. Skip washing your hair, cuts shower time down by a few minutes.

    2. Freeze your denim! It should save you a load or two of laundry while disinfecting your clothing.

    3. Collect and water your plants with rain water!

    -Anthony

    1. I Take super fast showers. Always under 8 minutes even when I wash my hair.

    2. Only run dishwasher when full.

    3. Only do laundry when bin is full.

    -Nicole

    1. Flush less often, don't use toilet to flush other trash.

    2. Don't leave water in any bottles when you throw them out. Pour water out to let it cycle the planet again.

    3. Fill the sink to hand wash dishes, instead of running the water the entire time.

    -Sharon

    1. Reuse towels as long as possible to cut down on laundry loads.

    2. Designate one cup or water bottle to refill thought the day this will cut down on the number of glasses you wash.

    3. When doing laundry match the water size to the size of the load.

    -Emily

    1. If you accidentally drop ice cubes or have some leftover in a drink, don't throw them away. Drop them into a houseplant instead.

    2. Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.

    3. Teach children the importance of conserving water. They will share these tips with friends and classmates.

    -Cortney

    1. Check all faucets and visible pipes in your home for leaks.

    2. Be aware of over watering your home's landscape.

    3. Support companies that promote efficient use of water by buying water saving products such as showerheads, faucets and toilets.

    -Michelle

    1. Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge instead of running the tap every time you want a drink. This way you're only using as much as you actually need.

    2. Cooking food such as vegetables in only as much water is as required saves water and preserves nutrients.

    3. For toilets that use a lot of water, fill a jar with rocks or sand and place it in the tank so there is less volume to fill with water, resulting in using less water each flush.

    -Felicity

    1. Catch the rain! Use it to water plants inside the house.

    2. Use mulch to retain water in your garden.

    3. Reuse dehumidifier water for other watering needs. It's almost pure water that's filtered!

    -Liz

    Pure Privilege

What is it? How does it work? Why should I enroll in THIS points program?

Pure Privilege is an Aveda specific points program that rewards you for buying Aveda products. It can be used most anywhere Aveda is sold. There is a one time enrollment fee of $10, but you get double the points on your first purchase with including that $10 enrollment fee.

But wait, there’s more! If you are a Salon Soca client you can use your Salon Soca points to enroll in Pure Privilege, for free! Just inquire at the front desk as to how many Soca points you have and how many you need to redeem for free enrollment into Pure Privilege. And yes, you’ve been automatically earning Soca points every time you spend money on services, gift certificates, refer a friend, and pre-book your next appointment.

Every time you buy Aveda products you present the front desk gal with your card and we swipe it on our specialized machine thingy and you earn points! Alternately we can put your card number in our computer notes so you don’t have to carry it around or if you forget your card one day, no big deal, it’s in your notes. Just don’t forget to remind us to punch in your number so you don’t lose out on points (we’re human too and sometimes forget)!

You should enroll in this program if you buy Aveda and like getting free things. No seriously though. You get free samples of products, you can redeem points or free makeup/ makeup brushes, you get birthday presents, you can get a gift certificate for money off your services at Salon Soca, or if you save enough you can even get a free trip. Yes, a free trip just for buying the Aveda products you already love.

Here is a link to the Pure Privilege website where you can read more in depth about the program as well as see what you can get with those points you’re gonna start earning. Then on your next visit, ask us about it! It takes like 1 minute to fill out the form then we do all the work from there. You can check your points and redeem them at any time on the website as well.

    Enroll today!

Dry Winter Blues? Aveda has something for that!

Here are a few of our favorite tips to deal with that winter hair and skin:

    1. Beautifying Composition Oil

This do everything oil is perfect for winter skin because it’s readily absorbed but heavy enough to add some serious moisture.

Dry hair and scalp? Massage this oil into your hair and scalp about 30 mins- 1 hour before you wash your hair like normal, except you'll end up with extra shiny and soft hair.

Do this about once a week or as needed.

Dry skin? Add a few drops to you body lotion to really amp up it’s benefits. Try Aveda’s Replenishing Body Lotion to help restore lost suppleness.

Can’t seem to remove your makeup without over drying? Use Beautifying Oil as a pre-cleanse! Massage a few drops onto your face before wetting, to help loosen dirt and makeup, then wash normally. It can also be used on a cotton pad as an easy eye makeup remover.

Dead of winter face is so dry you slather on the cream at night? Try adding just a couple of drops of Beautifying Oil to your night moisturizer, or apply the oil first then seal with your usual cream.

    2. Hand Relief Lotion

Emollients, humectants, exfoliating fruit acids and antioxidants are the keys to why Aveda’s Hand Relief is perfect for your dry, chapped hands. The rich texture is cool and soothing on cracked dry skin and with continued use it improves the elasticity of your skin.

    3. Exfoliate

Exfoliation is important for clearing away those dry, dead skin cells. Use one of these products once a week in the shower to reveal softer skin. ( On your body, not your face)

Smoothing Body Polish  or Caribbean Therapy Body Scrub

Don’t forget to follow up with body lotion!

    4. Taming Static Flyaways

Aveda’s Air Control Hairspray is a light, workable hold hairspray that’s perfect for taming static hair and pesky flyaways. It also acts a little like a dry shampoo by absorbing excess oil.  Light hold with no crunch so your hair stays soft and flexible.

Light Elements Smoothing Fluid is light, non-greasy and doesn’t get in the way of natural movement. Just run a small amount through dry hair to add shine and smooth down stray hairs.

For stronger control, try Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener if you like it straight and sleek; or for coarse textured hair, try Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss.

    5. Dry, Dry, Dry Hair!!

Aveda recently reformulated their Dry Remedy line to be better than ever.  The shampoo suds better, the conditioner rinses out better, and the masque penetrates without leaving behind a lot of residue.

Not to mention the brand new Dry Remedy Oil which increases the moisture in your hair by 41% all by itself.  The oil is light and and absorbs readily so it can be used on dry hair for an extra moisture boost or it can be used on wet hair to really lock in that moisture and shine.

Oh and the whole line smells ah-maz-ing. We can’t get enough!

We here at Salon Soca know the winter dry blues and we’re here to help!

Before I got into the industry I thought doing hair would allow me to be creative, look how I wanted to look, and I wouldn't be stuck at a desk or in an office. Lo and behold I was right and as time went on I loved/love doing hair for reasons I didn't even think about!

2- Was there a specific moment when you knew hair styling was what you wanted to do?

The moment I knew doing hair was it for me was when I got a job at a salon my senior year in high school. I finally felt like I fit in. It was a perfect fit for me to be around those people and see all the transformation on clients and each other; even the pace of life in the salon was exactly what I wanted. I fell in love with hair!

3- What is your inspiration of the moment or season?

I have always loved the fall. The colors, the fashions, even the smells! Fall is always a breath of fresh air and provides me with a new look at the world.

    undefinedundefined

    undefined

    undefined

4- What is your favorite trend of the season?

Well there is a lot to choose from but I still love all the braids that are getting incorporated into hairstyles. I always get excited about pin up hairstyles too!

    undefined  undefined

    undefined

     undefinedundefined

    undefinedundefined

5- What is your current favorite hair color trend?

I am loving all the softer, prettier colors and color techniques, nothing harsh.

    6- Favorite haircut to cut?

The graduated bob is my favorite, it’s a classic. It can be clean and conservative or it can be edgy. For me there is nothing more satisfying in haircutting then doing the perfect bob.

    undefined

7- What is the color or color process you have the most fun doing?

    I love doing reds!

    undefinedundefined

8- Do you have any hobbies, crafts or activities you enjoy?

I enjoy sewing and baking especially, but I am crafty in general!

9- How do other industries affect how you see doing hair? (i.e. do makeup trends affect your haircolors?etc....)

Fashion can make the hair or the hair can be the cherry on top for fashion. For example, when I am doing hair for an event, a night out or a wedding I always ask the person what they are wearing. It makes a difference to me how I end up doing the hair. Fashion and hair work in tandem, one can inspire the other but without a balance, neither reaches their full potential.

    10- Any recent life news?

I am pregnant with my second child!

11- As a creative professional how do you maintain that creative spark?

Something that I always find inspiring is when someone at work is watching a new music video or looking at fashion websites or even just looking at random things they find inspiring. I get inspired through their inspiration and it definitely keeps me "sparky".

12- Who is other stylist would you like to acknowledge? Why? (explain)

She will probably think I am obsessed or something because I often acknowledge her but, Cortney is such an inspiration to me. She always looks great for work and she is an eternal optimist. Also her updos and braids that she can do are drool worthy and jealousy inducing!

    Thanks Tara!

Our Featured Stylist is... Nicole Etkin!

Nicole has graciously agreed to answer a few questions about her life, style, and what makes her an amazing hair stylist and make-up artist.

1- Why did you become a stylist?

I have always been crazy about the world of beauty. I love to try new things with makeup and hair. It was always important to me that my own hair and makeup looked perfect. From a young age, I knew that it was a world that I wanted to be a part of. I was always creative and visual. When I went to college I started playing with other peoples hair and doing makeup. That is when I knew that I had to go to beauty school. I love this industry so much and nothing is better than making someone feel beautiful.

2- What is your favorite trend of the season?

I am loving that straight and sleek hair is making a comeback.  Long hair has been wavy (not that it isn't stylish) for so long and it is nice to see something so classic and simple.  I love the way straight, sleek hair shines.  I also love that it is something that is simple for my clients to do themselves.

(left: Helmut Lang Spring 2014, right: Chloe Spring 2014)

3-What is your current favorite hair color trend?I love seeing deeper blondes.  More golden tones that are enhanced with lighter and even more intense low lights.  I think it is a bit softer and more rich.

4- What is your favorite product this season and why? How do you use it?

I am always a huge fan of Aveda Light Elements Texturizing creme. It is a truly amazing finishing product. I love to use it on finer hair for light hold and texture as well as on curls as a finisher. It smooths very well while adding light definition and helps control frizz too.

5- Favorite celebrity cut or color or both?

I am a huge Robyn fan and I am always in love with her hair. She is my personal hair icon. Also, I think Michelle Williams has beautiful hair. Her color is always impeccable. I love the variation in all of her blondes. From the copper and strawberry tones to her blonde bombshell look, she is always spot on. Her haircuts are always phenomenal too. Her pixie was perfection.

    6- Favorite haircut to cut?

I always love cutting a graduated bob and I love to cut short hair. I think short hair always looks styled and sexy.

7- What is the color or color process you have the most fun doing?

I love doing blondes. I am a blonde and I love to create beautiful blondes. I guess I would say that highlighting is my "thing". Right from the start of my career as a stylist I could relate to my blonde clients and their NEED to be blonde, blonde, blonde. I love being able to change their tones from season to season. Blondes are very particular about what they want and I love being able to make it happen for them. It is very rewarding.

8- Favorite magazine or website? Why?

I recently have fallen in love with cultofpretty.com. I believe that this blog is different from other beauty and hair blogs because she posts a lot of interesting and edgier things. The photos that she selects are beautiful and she makes great recommendations on products, skincare, makeup, haircare and anything else beauty related that you can think of. I am also a sucker for Glamour. I think everyone can find something that they love in each issue and the beauty tips are pretty good too.

9- What do you enjoy doing on your days off?

I love to spend time with my friends on my days off. I enjoy being outside and dining al fresco. Who doesn't, right? I try to take advantage of the warmer months and get out as much as possible. I walk my dog a lot when I have the time. I also try to travel to visit my family as often as possible because they live all spread out over the country. We spend lots of time talking on the phone too. And I love watching TV ;)

10- Is there another industry besides hair that you are passionate about or inspires you?

I am very passionate about my makeup career too. I have always had a strong love for makeup and the way that it can transform a person. Being able to do my clients hair and help them with makeup, or do their makeup for an occasion is the best. I love being able to see it all the way through. My personal love of makeup and products helps me to be able to assist others with things that will work for them.

    11- Any recent life news?

I just found out that I am going to be an AUNT!!!!

12- Who is another stylist you would like to acknowledge? Why?

I would love to acknowledge Tara. Not only is she my very good friend and my personal hair guru, but she is an incredibly talented stylist. She is wonderful with her clients and very passionate about her work. She has always been an inspiration to me. She is also a wonderful Mom who manages to juggle it all.

    Thanks for sharing Nicole!

Looking for a new summer DIY? Try a new twist on an old tradition.

Sure we all tie-dyed a tee when we were kids, but how about a chic grown up version to try out? Shibori is a Japanese method of dyeing using binding, stitching, compression, twists and folds. Each method produces it’s own pattern on the fabric. For a little more info take a look at the wikipedia page about shibori. There’s also a great blog post here from Need Supply that is a wonderful visual intro to each method of shibori.

A quick google search produced a few results for traditional shibori kits or you can go with a simple indigo dye kit like this one. Then, of course, you’ll need a tutorial. Here’s a great one from Honestly...WTF, http://honestlywtf.com/diy/shibori-diy/.

Here are some images to help you visualize your new creation.

             Kate Bosworth at Coachella

Shibori shorts from Upstate, which is a clothing line that uses shibori dyeing extensively

    Smooth Infusion Style Prep

Smooth Infusion style prep is one of our best sellers and here’s why, it works.

    • Exclusive plant infusion; a blend derived from organic aloe, maize and guar bean which creates a smooth surface on hair

    • Organic tapioca defends against humidity for up to 12 hour

    • Hydrolized wheat protein protects against surface damage from heat styling

Apply one to two pumps on towel dried hair (don’t rub, gently squeeze out excess moisture). Blow dry until the hair is 100% dry. If you need more smoothness or it’s particularly humid (hello Chicago summer!) finish with a smoothing product on top. We like Aveda Light Elements Smoothing Fluid for fine hair to medium hair, Aveda Glossing Straightener for medium to coarse hair, and Aveda Brillant Emollient Finishing Gloss for coarse hair.

    Getting to know Cortney Tippin

What made you become a stylist? I've always been interested in hair.  I was such a tomboy that I didn't want to admit it.  I went from wanting to be a nurse, car mechanic, to finally realizing what I wanted to do all along.

Where do you find inspiration? Neon colors! Pinterest, creating different looks during fashion shows, beyonce - that girl has got it going on!

Best piece of advice you've ever got? I've always loved the Shakespeare quote "to thyne own self be true". I try living by that everyday.

Your coolest Fashion Show? 1. Sei Bella Fashion Show at the Drake.  Anthony Maslo and I teamed with AVEDA to produce this amazing show (see pictures from this under "about" and then "photo gallery").  2. The Birth of a Hybrid, a Bonnie and Clyde show.

Who is your mentor? My best friend and co-worker, Anthony Maslo.  We are always challenging each other with new ideas.  Some friendly competition on who is up on the latest trends.

What's your favorite outfit at the moment? I love my dresses with a high-low hem line.  Anything neon, and of course my big earrings and bangle bracelets! Duh!

What's your favorite styling tool? My rod curling iron.  You can get so many different looks.  I also love air control and the whole damage remedy line to help repair my hair from all the updos and curling I do to it.

Earth Month - why do we continue to donate?

As most of you know, Salon Soca partners with AVEDA and The Alliance for the Great Lakes every year for earth month.  Our goal is to raise as much money to benefit clean water as we possibly can.  But, did you know that the Great Lakes account for almost 20% or the earth's surface water?  Or that the Great Lakes provide drinking water to more than 40 million people throughout the United States?  Yeah, neither did we.  That's why it's so important to us to continue to fundraise for such a great cause.

Over the last 5 years clients of AVEDA salons (including ours) ave helped to raise 16 million dollars to benefit the Alliance for the Great Lakes.  So we would like to say "thank you" on behalf of Salon Soca and AVEDA.  Let's try and hit 20 million by this time next year!  You guys are awesome!

To learn more about the Alliance for the Great Lakes you can visit this website.

    Client Appreciation Week

What's the best way to say "thank you" to your clients?  Well we've thought of our own way, client appreciatio week!  During the last full week of March we will be giving clients 10% off of services AND retail.  What could be better than that?

This is our way of saying "thanks" to our clients for their continued support.  Without you, Salon Soca would not be what it is today.

    Turmeric and its Benefits.

Recently AVEDA has come out with a few new products that feature an ingredient called Turmeric.  So our question is, what exactly is it and how does it work?

Here is what we have found out.  Turmeric is a spice commonly used in Asian foods.  Its benefits are numerous and seems to help with a lot of digestion and proves to aid in certain health issues.  The way AVEDA has used it is in two different products.  The first is their new Invati system.  They have also come out with a new lash growing product called Lash Abundance Boosting Serum.

The Invati system uses tumeric to stimulate the hair shaft and folicle to prevent the loss of hair.  You will notice a warm tingly feeling when the products are applied to the head, this is how you know that it is working.  It is proven to reduce hair loss by 33%.

Lash Abundance Boosting Serum uses the spice in a similar way.  With a thin brush users will apply the product to their upper and lower lash lines twice daily.  It will aid in the growth of longer, fuller lashes.  Tumeric helps to stimulate the growth of the lashes within 8 weeks of use.  Unlike those other lash growing products out there, Lash Abundace Boosting Serum is 98% naturally derived and safe for contact-wearers.

I have personally been using both of these new AVEDA products and am absolutely in love with the results I have seen.  My lashes are noticably growing and my hair isn't clogging the drain anymore!

To learn about other benefits of Tumeric; here is a great site that I found!

Shortage of Donated Food in Chicagoland Area.

The time of year has arrived once again.  The time to donate and give until you have nothing left.  So how could there be a shortage of donated goods throughout the Chicagoland area you ask?  Well here is the long and short of it...

Since the decline of the economy the number of people in need of donated goods has almost doubled in size.

A charity in the south Chicago area reported that before the economy declined they saw about 1,300 to 1,500 people per month; compared to their monthly average of 2,100 to 2,300 in the present (link to article).  So here we are asking ourselves what we can do to help out this holiday season, and the answer is apparent - donate, donate, donate.

Salon Soca is doing their part and participating in a holiday food and toy drive.  Stop in with your donation and we will even extend the opportunity to get 10% off of your appointment in February.

    What's the deal with Quinoa?

We keep hearing about this protein known as Quinoa (keen-wah).  So what's the deal? What's so great about it?  Well here are the facts...

Quinoa protein was used by the Incas in 3,000 B.C. to sustain their troops.  Found in the Andes, Quinoa was traditionally known as the "mother grain" (http://chetdaycom/quinoa.html).  Turns out that with 16.2 percent, this little seed contains more grain than any other protein (www.quinoa.com).

With this protein now found in our most popular styling product, Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair, we are able to give our hair the benefits that the Incas used to give their bodies.  Maybe we should all look into using it in our food as well...I know the wonders that it has worked for my hair will surely benefit my body.

(ps. you can now get this in travel sizes for your holiday gift bags.  Who wouldn't want to get a little hair therapy?)

Aveda Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System - the facts.

Finally a retexturizing system that is safe for your hair!  Aveda's Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System is 74% naturally derived and most importantly, still permanent.  The most popular texture systems on the market, currently, will wash out within 6-8 weeks.  Another great perk of The Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System is that it contains organic jojoba oil, meadowfoam seed oil, and coconut-derived conditioners to help protect hair during processing.

Unlike other systems though, guests who have had a sodium hydroxide relaxer are not eligible for this service, and once this service is performed; guests will not be able to go back to getting sodium hydroxide relaxers.  The two services use different ingredients to retexturize the hair, if one service is performed after the other, the hair could be permanently damaged.

For more information about The Smooth Infusion Retexturizing System visit Aveda's Website, or set up a consultation with one of our stylists!

Back to School, Back to School...you can finish the rest.

The time has come, yet again, for the kids to go back to school.  Whether you're sending them off to college or they're leaving you for the first time - we found an article with some great money saving tips.

We found this money saving article interesting, mainly because it is so true!  Plus, the extra money saved on "back to school" only leaves more money in Mom's pocket for, ahem, beauty!

I'd like to add some things to this particular artricle that may have been left out.  For those college kids looking to save a few bucks and avoid carrying around those heavy text books, Course Smart is a wonderful website to try.  During my college years I downloaded my text books directly to my computer (or iPad) and took them with me everywhere, without the hassle of carrying around 3 or 4 different books at once.  In addition, they have recently made an app for this particular site for smartphones.

So when you are doing that "back to school" shopping for your little, or big, ones, make sure to keep these types of things in mind.  You'll be grateful when you have some extra cash lying around to play with while they are away!

    07/20/2011

Notice that color fading quicker because of the summer sun?  You can prolong that color by booking a gloss treatment with your next appointment.  This will not only protect your color from that pesky sun, but give your hair the shine it craves.

Using the Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil every time you go out in the sun will help keep that color protected as well.  Apply to wet or dry hair.  For that added boost incorporate the Aveda Sun Care After Sun Hair Maque into your daily routine.
